The Sacred Web: Unitarian Universalism's Seventh Principle and the Ecology of Existence

Among the seven Principles that covenant Unitarian Universalist congregations, the seventh holds a unique and expansive place: "Respect for the interdependent web of all existence, of which we are a part." This statement is both a spiritual affirmation and a profound ecological and philosophical truth claim, serving as a foundational ethic for modern religious naturalism. To understand its depth is to explore its scientific underpinnings, its theological implications, and its urgent call to ethical living. At its core, this principle moves beyond a mere acknowledgment of nature's beauty to assert a fundamental ontology of relationship. It posits that existence is not a collection of discrete, independent objects, but a dynamic, interconnected process. Is this true that all existence is interdependent? From a scientific perspective, evidence abounds. In ecology, the concept of the food web illustrates how energy and matter flow through systems, where the loss of a single s...

"A Learning Opportunity" a poem by Charles Anthony Hood

Failure is a learning opportunity,

Not something to be feared.

Success often follows failure.

Keep sight of your goals and dreams:

Your success is just around the corner.

Sometimes people fear failure or rejection.

If you have never failed, you haven’t tried.

If you have never been rejected, you haven’t…

Put your heart out there for others to love you.

Walking into the unknown brings surprises.

Fear not the unknown surprises,

For they are often pleasant.

Fear of the unknown…

Is often an impediment for many,

But the unknown, however, is unavoidable.

The great unknown…

What if this or that happens?

Many would stay in a rut for life,

As opposed to facing the unknown…

Courageously with fire in their eyes!

We all do what we can…

To live the life we’re given.

Sometimes it takes time…

To help us learn life’s lessons.

We must pay attention!

Time ticks quickly by,

Leaving behind those who…

Fail to keep up.

The quake of laughter…

Dissolves into crying.

Never have tears solved anything,

For they only wet your cheeks.

Any solution can be found with reason.

Hysterics do not help get things done,

But a clear, rational mind does.

Courage is facing the unknown…

Meeting it head on…

Without backing down an inch…

And never retreating or surrendering,

Always striving to take the next step forward.

The type of person you are…

Has been determined by your decisions.

The person you will become…

Will also be determined by your decisions.

Decide to take the next step forward.

Never give up on your dreams,

For they are what gives you hope,

A purpose to work toward,

And a meaning in this life.

Dreams are life’s motivators!
